It is an indisputable fact that every human ultimately strives for happiness. Good health and well-being are the two essential components necessary for true happiness. Health and fitness make the difference between living well and merely living. Quality of life is what we all want. Quality of life is what is really important and not quantity. Adding life to years and not years to life is the core principle of truly healthy living. Good health helps us achieve a high quality of life.
What does Soukhya mean?
Soukhya is a Sanskrit word, meaning - welfare , comfort , joy, bliss, health , happiness , felicity , enjoyment.
What does it mean to be truly healthy?
Health is a complex concept, and has been defined in many ways by different individuals and groups over time. One key point of agreement however, is that health is more than the just absence of disease. Health has been described in various ways:
World Health Organization:
Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. It is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
A healthy individual is a man who is well balanced bodily and mentally, and well adjusted to his physical and social environment.
He is in full control of his physical and mental faculties, can adapt to environmental changes, as long as they do not exceed natural limits; and contributes to the welfare of society to his ability.
Canadian Public Health Association:
"To reach a state of complete physical, mental and social well being, an individual or group must be able to identify and to realize aspirations, to satisfy needs, and to change or cope with the environment. Health is, therefore, seen as a resource of everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities."
First Nations:
"Good health is a balance of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual elements. All four interact together to form a strong, healthy person. If we neglect one of these elements, we get out of balance and our health suffers in all...Everything we need has been provided by our common mother, the earth...When we combine these gifts with an active lifestyle, a positive attitude, and peaceful and harmonious relations with other people and the spiritual world—good health will be ours."
Osho:
"The body is the visible soul, and the soul is the invisible body. The body and soul are not divided anywhere. They are parts of each other, they are parts of one whole. You have to accept the body, you have to love the body, you have to respect the body, you have to be grateful to the body... The body is the most complex mechanism in existence - it is simply marvellous! And blessed are those who marvel. Begin the feeling of wonder with your own body, because that is the closest to you.
The closest nature has approached to you, the closest existence has come to you, through the body. In your body is the water of the oceans, in your body is the fire of the stars and the suns, in your body is the air, your body is made of earth. Your body represents the whole of existence, all the elements. And what a transformation! What a transformation, and you have never marvelleed about it! Dust has become divine - what great mystery is possible? What greater miracles are you waiting for? And you see the miracle happening every day. Out of the mud comes the lotus... and out of the dust has arisen our beautiful body.
Modern medical science has viewed man as a separate unit, apart from nature. That is one of the gravest errors that has been commited. Man is part of nature; his health is nothing but being at ease with nature. Modern medicine takes a mechanical view of man, so wherever mechanics can be successful, it is successful. But man is not a machine; man is an organic unity, and man needs not just treatment of the part that is sick. The sick part is only a symptom that the whole organism is going through difficulties. The sick part is only visible because it is the weakest.
You treat the sick part, and you seem successful... but then, somewhere else the disease appears. You have only prevented the disease from expressing itself through the sick part; you have made it stronger, but you do not understand that man is a whole: either he is sick or he is healthy, there is no in-between. Man should be viewed as a whole organism."
